New Drug For Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)
MDS is a disease of the bone marrow characterized by anemia and abnormalities of the white blood cells and platelets. It sometimes transforms into leukemia, and, even when it does not it is difficult to treat, and, can be fatal. A new agent from Jansen Research Foundation, R11577, a farnesyl transferase inhibitor, has shown promise. In an MD Anderson study, 2 of 16 patients had complete remissions in this difficult to treat disease.
