Infection With H-Pylori Implicated In Low Platelet Disorder

Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) is a disorder where circulating blood platelets are decreased to possibly dangerous levels which can lead to hemorrhage. Traditionally, this disorder has been thought to be of immune origin and has yielded to immunosuppressive therapy (steroids, etc.).

A startling study from Japan has shifted the paradigm. About 63% of ITP patients responded to treatment aimed at eradicating H-Pylori, a bacteria implicated in gastric ulcers. This important new finding will mean safer, quicker and cheaper treatment for patients with ITP.
