Zevalin For Treatment of Resistant Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphomas Approved
Anti-Lymphoma therapy has been advancing over the last few years. Previously, untargeted chemotherapy and steroids were the only systemic agents available. With the approval of Rituximab targeted antibody therapy was now possible. Useful as Rituximab is, patients can and do become refractory to it. Zevalin takes the concept of antibody therapy to the next level. A radioactive isotope is fused to an antibody and in smart bomb style zeroes in on the lymphoma cells and delivers a hoped for lethal strike without affecting normal cells.
This drug is a definite advance and similar targeted drugs are in the pipeline close behind Zevalin. With the incidence of lymphoma unfortunately rising these drugs will be increasingly in demand.
